A disturbing incident of assault has been reported at the Diamond Glace residence of the Durban University of Technology (DUT). According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when Thokozani Mtshali, the alleged perpetrator, got into an argument with a female security guard. Andiswa Mhlongo, a resident, attempted to intervene and calm the situation, but Mtshali allegedly assaulted her, leaving her with a bloody face.
Witnesses described the incident, stating that Mtshali fled the scene after the assault. Notably, Mtshali was reportedly wearing a DUT t-shirt during the altercation but quickly changed into an EFF t-shirt afterward. Mhlongo, who was wearing an MK Party t-shirt, believes the assault may have been politically motivated.
The matter was reported to the authorities, but Mhlongo expressed frustration with the response from SAPS Durban Central. According to her, the police officers advised her to seek a medical report and open a protection order against Mtshali, rather than making any arrests. Mhlongo felt that the police response was inadequate, especially given her concerns about the potential political motivations behind the assault.
The incident has raised concerns about safety within the university residences. Mhlongo expressed anxiety about her safety and questioned the university's handling of the situation. The DUT Student Representative Council (SRC) has been made aware of the incident, with member Mhleli Zuma stating that the matter has been escalated to the appropriate offices for further action.
The university's response to the incident has been called into question, particularly regarding the role of the Residence Advisor and the handling of assault cases. The incident highlights the need for improved safety measures and support systems for students within the university residences.
