"The forces now seated across the aisle of the GNU in parliament are led by the likes of impeached high court judge, John Hlophe, and VBS theft-accused, Julius Malema, whose parties are the very antithesis to what we as South Africa hope to achieve", DA leader John Steenhuisen stated

On 17 July of Tuesday, the Democratic Alliance leader delivered remarks in Cape Town in a press conference giving an overview of the Democratic Alliance (DA) regarding their role in the government and parliament moving forward.

Democratic Alliance Panel consisted of New National Spokerperson Karabo Khakhau DA National Spokesperson who introduced her colleagues, Willie Aucamp second DA National Spokerperson , the leader of the Democratic and the Minister of Agriculture and Democratic leader Alliance John Steehuisen, the Deputy Whip of Parliament Baxolile Nodada , and Democratic Whipp in Parliament George Machalakisi. John Steenhuised led the panel opening his speech by reflecting on the 20 years of the Democratic Alliance, " After serving for the past 20 years as the official opposition in South Africa’s democratic dispensation, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has stepped into a new role as the second-largest political party in the Government of National Unity (GNU) where no single political party received an outright majority in the 2024 General Election" he said.

John Sheehuisen outlined the pivotal and influential role cabinet ministers and Deputy Ministers can play in the executive branch of the government. After emphasizing how he has led the DA into GNU to keep a promise. John Sheehuisen in his speech also mentioned the two opposing parties which are EFF and MK Party, "Nowhere is this more evident than in the utterances and behavior of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) parties which would seek to implement destructive policies and ideals such as the abolition of the constitution, and parliamentary sovereignty – a proposal which harks back to the dark days of our past. Where the EFF and MK seek to break our country, the DA seeks to build it. And where the EFF and MK seek to undo the progress made by a free and prosperous South Africa, the DA will fight to advance it," said John Steehsuinsen the Minister of Agriculture and the Federal leader of the Democratic Alliance.

George Machalakis DA Chief Whip who followed after John Steehsuisen, opened up his speech by highlighting the words of a Federal leader John Steehuisen, Mr Machakis said that their influence in GNU and parliament remains significant and they will use it to advocate for policies that promote Prosperity equality and justice. He also emphasized how determined. they are as DA to play their role and they are dedicated to ensuring that the government remains transparent. Mr. Machalakisi said they already dealt conclusively with the issue of land expropriation without compensation and they will never condone grandstanding using the constitution as a political football, Mr. Machalakisi commented on the statements which were issued by different politicians wanting to reopen the debate on section 25.

Baxolile Nodada Democratic Alliance Deputy WHIP, Mr. Nodada followed after George Machalakis. In his speech opening, he started by mentioning that they have all the mechanisms necessary to ensure that they do the work that South African voters asked for in the 2024 Elections." Parliament is not just an institution that makes laws it does and it must go further than that, it must be a body that ensures that these laws are just and do not infringe on the rights of other citizens as enshrined in the Constitution," he emphasized

Mr Steehsuisen said for hundreds of working days the priorities are to examine the state of the department to see where the low-hanging fruits and the quick winds that are to clean up the government where there are obvious corruption issues and I think you know both in Home Affairs you have seen Minister McPherson exposes the cyber scamming.

Democratic Alliance expects that in the Opening of Parliament Address tomorrow, President Cyril Ramaphosa will outline South Africa’s reform agenda, " which I am proud to announce, in many cases, is aligned with DA policy when it comes to unlocking investment and economic growth and building a capable state. I am glad to see that the DA’s presence in the GNU is strong and visible, and I trust that the President’s address will reflect the plurality of voices now in the national government and that he will commit himself wholeheartedly to this necessary policy shift,"John Stenhuisen expecetd.
